Reviews

We have in store a pair of B Stock Tweek Geek made (under license) Aurai Z165 gen 1 available in maple wood veneer. These have the original woofers with updated crossovers that deal with a woofer resonance that was not addressed in the original crossover. They have the original Supravox woofer that was used in the Sixmoons review posted above. Included are metal stands with matching wood accents, and Isoacoustics Gaia footers. All together these would have sold for roughly $9,000 a pair. We are selling them at a blowout price with shipping included. Understand shipping will be roughly $500 or more. The speakers will ship in a custom crate, and the stands will be boxed. These can be updated with the Gen 2 woofer and matching crossover for $1400.

NOTE: The above graph shows the frequency response of the speaker in their enclosure. The  tweeter was measured WITHOUT the additional magnetic attenuation, which flattens the response of the HF driver to match the woofer.

This is what makes the Aurai Z165 special. The drivers are extremely fast with very little ringing.

The Z165 From Aurai

The Z165 is a 6.5" two way loudspeaker of extraordinary capability. They possess a magical ability to project the energy and emotion of the music into the room in a natural, realistic and captivating way. Fairly efficient, time-aligned, with exquisite parts and construction make this speaker unique among it's peers. The original version utilized a first order crossover that did not address a resonance in the woofer. We have redesigned the crossover with a third order crossover and resonance network on the woofer. The response graphs shown illustrate our success.

The Aurai Tweeter

It starts with Aurai's unique, polymer membrane high frequency driver with a mass of less than 12 milligrams. This driver has a unique, floating suspension system  (rather than a surround) that retains non-resonant properties and stiffness while minimizing mass. There is no glue, no screws, nothing to hamper travel or add weight to the diaphragm. It simply floats in it's magnetic suspension, optimized for maximum speed and resolution.

"First impressions? "What an incredible tweeter!"...This was one hellaciously fast and responsive HF unit. It dug deep into the finest upper harmonics...This unknown French tweeter was superior to the far heavier but famous Mundorf AMT in our regular monitors. It was superior to the inverted ceramid Accuton dome in our Albedo Aptica Two-way towers. It most reminded me of a Raal ribbon, albeit with a higher energy density and more color...I thought this dome tweeter to be second only to Michael Borreson's high-tech, ultra-costly ribbon which I'd heard in this room the year prior..."  Srajan, Sixmoons

To mate the tweeter with the woofer, Aurai employs an ingenious use of neodymium magnets stacked on the back of the tweeter to attenuate it's output level. This works much better than the standard attenuation circuit in the signal path simply because nothing extra is added to the signal path, and the same ends are accomplished.

The Woofer

The woofer has an extremely lightweight, paper cone that can keep up with the speed and resolution of the tweeter. As we mentioned, we have reworked the crossover in these to units to flatten the frequency response even further than the original network by eliminating a resonance peak in the woofer.

Time Alignment

Another element of the Magic in Z series speakers are in the time-alignment of the drivers. The horn loaded tweeter rides on top of the enclosure and is precisely set back from the front baffle, physically time aligning it with the woofer's output. This mechanical alignment ensures that the signal from both drivers arrives at the listener's ears with perfect timing.

Enclosure

The enclosure for these speakers was made in Texas by Joshua Miles of JWM Acoustics. They have slightly less depth than the standard Z165, and the port length was adjusted to accommodate the enclosure volume. This was an option for customers who didn't like the extra-deep cabinets of the original design.

They are constructed from birch ply. This was chosen for it's stiffness, and the alternating grain direction of each layer of plywood helps to disperse energy in a more optimal way.

The Z165 incorporates a slotted port in the rear that takes the bass response down to 40Hz.  For small to medium rooms, the Z165 will be all the speaker you need, as the bass output is shockingly agile, deep and fast. For larger rooms you may want to pair with a subwoofer, but we would likely recommend the Z215 for it's higher output capability.
