For my PrimaLuna (PL) EVO 100 integrated amp, I bought a matched quad of Ray Tube (RT) Select EL 34’s, a matched pair of RT Select 12 AX7’s, and a matched pair of RT Select 12 AU7’s. For my PL EVO 100 V2 phono preamp, I bought a matched pair of RT Select EL 34’s and a matched quad of RT Select 12 AX7’s. I was so thoroughly blown away by the performance of these tubes that I purchased a matched pair of RT Select 12 AT7’s for the MC section of the PL phono preamp. I can’t really describe how great these tubes are. First, they’re the most quiet tubes I’ve ever owned, and I own some very pricey NOS Telefunken, Brimar, GE, and National small signal tubes. Second, no tube I’ve ever owned has sounded as precise, open, and airy as the RT’s. Finally, there is essentially no distortion or top-end fizz in these tubes. They’re unbelievable. They are a little more pricey than current production tubes, but they are actually made for music reproduction. So, I feel they’re totally worth the price. Also, when was the last time anyone offered you a warranty on vacuum tubes? That’s confidence in a great product. I’m selling all my other tubes. I’ll only buy Ray Tubes as long as I can get them. Ray Tubes SELECT 12AT7

The 12AT7 is the middle sibling in the 12A family, with more gain than a 12AU7, and it's often the tube that drives your output stage or splits the phase. The SELECT 12AT7 is a new-production dual triode that Ray Tubes builds to its own audio specifications and keeps only when it ranks among the best of its batch.

The Design

SELECT takes the reliability and consistency of Ray Tubes' CORE line as its starting point and aims at one thing: more nuanced sound. Ray Tubes builds each tube with manufacturing partners to its own audio specifications, then sells only the best tubes from each batch; Ray Tubes says fewer than 5% of production meets its standard. Audio engineers with decades of experience take part in the selection from start to finish, including listening sessions in real-world conditions. The pins are gold-plated for corrosion resistance and improved conduction.

Every Ray Tubes tube passes a seven-step process in three phases. Phase one checks reliability: soldering inspection under a microscope and a 24-hour burn-in. Phase two measures critical parameters, matches tubes by current draw, and tests for microphonics. Phase three is an amplifier test with listening by Ray Tubes' sound engineers, plus targeted expert listening sessions on randomly chosen tubes. Measurements are recorded under each tube's serial number.

How It Sounds

Ray Tubes describes the SELECT 12AT7 as balanced and natural, with tight, well-controlled bass; mids that combine warmth and clarity; smooth, transparent treble with a gentle brightness; and rich dynamics inside a wide soundstage with precise imaging. Positive Feedback's Tom Gibbs found that the Ray Select tubes in his A12 Classic raised every one of his system performance metrics significantly, and Tharbamar heard a much quieter background and a smooth, warm sound.

Where It Fits

The 12AT7 belongs to the same dual-triode family as the 12AX7 and 12AU7, with higher gain and transconductance, and in audio it commonly serves as a driver or phase inverter in push-pull circuits. Warranty and Break-In

Ray Tubes' One Year Warranty covers manufacturing defects for twelve months, tied to the original invoice and the serial number on the box, so it transfers to a new owner. If one tube in a matched pair or quad fails, Ray Tubes replaces the whole set. Give new tubes 48 to 96 hours of use to break in; early quirks such as slight background noise or imbalance usually fade as hours accumulate. Each tube comes with a user handbook with burn-in guidelines and a certificate of authenticity and warranty.
