The Audience AdeptResponse aR12 is a 12-outlet power conditioner built around a fundamentally different philosophy: low-impedance power delivery with wide-bandwidth noise reduction — no current-limiting inductors, no degrading MOV devices, no dynamic compression. Magnetic circuit breaker, partial power factor correction, per-outlet double filtering, and cryogenic treatment throughout. TAS Editor's Choice 2015–2023. Available in four configurations: aR12, aR12-OX, aR12-T3, and aR12-T4.

Audience AdeptResponse aR12 Power Conditioners

Clean Power That Doesn't Get in the Way

The most common complaint about power conditioners among serious audiophiles is not that they fail to reduce noise — it's that they also reduce dynamics. The low-impedance demands of a power amplifier, in particular, are compromised by the series-impedance filtering that most conditioners use. The result is a quieter, cleaner sound that is also softer, slower, and less capable at dynamic peaks. Many listeners conclude that they prefer no conditioner at all.

The Audience AdeptResponse aR12 was designed around a fundamentally different premise: that noise reduction and dynamic performance are not in conflict if the conditioner is engineered correctly. The aR12's architecture maintains a low-impedance power path at all times while providing wide-bandwidth noise reduction, power factor correction, and sophisticated transient suppression — without the series inductance, the current-limiting topology, or the degrading MOV devices that compromise conventional conditioner designs.

The result, across years of press recognition and user experience, is consistently the same: a conditioner that makes good systems sound better without taking anything away in the process. As The Absolute Sound's Greg Weaver wrote after reviewing the aR12-T4, once it was in his system there was no chance it was coming out.

What Makes the AdeptResponse Different

Low-impedance power path — the foundation of everything. Most power conditioners introduce series resistance and inductance between the wall and your components. This is how they filter noise — but it also limits the current that can flow instantaneously to your amplifier during dynamic transients. The aR12 takes a different approach: filtering is achieved without adding significant series resistance, maintaining a low-impedance path that allows your components to draw the current they need, precisely when they need it.

Wide-bandwidth noise reduction. Conventional conditioners filter effectively at some frequencies and poorly at others. The aR12's filtering architecture provides effective noise reduction across a wide bandwidth — addressing the RF and electromagnetic noise that pollutes the mains from digital devices, switching power supplies, lighting, and every other interference source in the modern listening environment.

Power factor correction. The aR12 performs partial power factor correction — restoring a more favorable phase relationship between the AC voltage and current waveforms. This improves the efficiency of power transfer to your components, contributing to the more natural dynamics and more relaxed, uncompressed presentation that the aR12 is consistently praised for.

No MOV devices. The Metal Oxide Varistor is the surge protection device of choice in most power conditioners. It is also a sacrificial device that degrades over time, and in the process begins to behave like a poorly performing capacitor across the power line — storing energy and releasing it as time-delayed distortion that is audible as a subtle but persistent compression and softening of the sound. The aR12 uses non-wearing high-voltage transient suppression that protects your equipment without the progressive degradation of MOV-based designs.

Magnetic circuit breaker. The aR12 uses a high-quality magnetic circuit breaker rather than the thermal breakers found in most power conditioning equipment. Thermal breakers increase in resistance as power demand increases — restricting current precisely when your amplifier needs it most. The magnetic circuit breaker presents a more consistent and more favorable impedance across all power demand levels.

Individual outlet filtering — and double filtering between outlets. Each of the 12 outlets is individually filtered, providing maximum isolation for every component in your system. And every outlet is double-filtered from every other outlet, preventing noise generated by one component from contaminating the AC supply of another. This component-to-component isolation is particularly valuable in systems that mix digital and analog components on the same conditioner — without it, the switching noise from a DAC or streamer can reach the power supply of a preamplifier or amplifier.

Incoming voltage meter. A front-panel display shows the incoming AC voltage in real time — a practical and useful reference for monitoring the quality of your mains supply.

The aR12 Model Range

The aR12 is available in four configurations, each progressively upgraded in capacitor type, filtering sophistication, internal wiring, and outlet quality. All models share the same fundamental architecture, low-impedance philosophy, magnetic circuit breaker, individual outlet filtering, and cryogenic treatment.

aR12 — The foundation model. Auricap XO+ polypropylene film capacitors, standard filter topology, OFC internal power wiring, Hospital Grade Hubbell outlets. The reference standard for the line.

aR12-OX — Upgrades the aR12 with Au24 SX OCC internal power wiring and Hidden Treasure premium duplex outlets — the same outlet technology used in Audience's dedicated wall receptacle. Same Auricap XO+ capacitors and standard filter as the aR12.

aR12-T3 — Steps up to Aura-TR Teflon capacitors, which offer superior dielectric properties compared to polypropylene film. Paired with the standard filter topology and OFC internal wiring. A meaningful advancement in resolution and tonal purity over the aR12.

aR12-T4 — The flagship. Aura-TR Teflon capacitors combined with Audience's advanced S-Filter topology, Au24 SX OCC internal power wiring, Hidden Treasure premium duplex outlets, and the Ultra High Voltage Process applied after assembly. The T4 represents, in TAS's assessment, a world-class device and a substantial improvement over its predecessors — bordering on an order-of-magnitude advance.

What to Expect

The improvements the aR12 delivers are consistent with what its architecture promises: a lower noise floor that allows low-level detail to emerge with greater clarity, improved resolution of fine harmonic texture, more stable and three-dimensional imaging, and dynamics that are not compressed or softened — if anything, power amplifiers plugged into the aR12 display increased dynamics and perform as if they were more powerful.

This last quality is what separates the AdeptResponse from most competing conditioners. The conventional view — that you should never plug a power amplifier into a conditioner — does not apply here. The aR12's low-impedance design accommodates the most demanding amplifier loads without restriction.

Marshall Nack at Positive Feedback described the T4 as applying the finishing touches to a good system — not shifting frequency response or changing the character of what's already there, but fleshing it out and completing it. That's precisely the design intent, and consistent with what every reviewer of this conditioner has found.

Included Powerchord — and Upgrade Options

Every aR12 ships with a 1.75m forte f5 powerChord. For those who want to maximize performance at the conditioner's inlet, upgrade powerChords are available:

  • Studio ONE powerChord (10 AWG, 6 ft.) — add $2,400
  • Au24 SX powerChord (10 AWG, 6 ft.) — add $4,660
  • frontRow powerChord (10 AWG, 6 ft.) — add $6,300

The powerChord feeding the conditioner is the first link in the chain for every component in your system — upgrading it has a proportionally larger effect than upgrading any individual component's cord.
