LUMIN X2 Network Music Player

A New Core — LUMIN's Finest Streaming Achievement

After years of in-house R&D, LUMIN's flagship has arrived with a technology milestone at its center: the first LUMIN discrete DAC. Not a chip from an outside supplier, not an adapted architecture — a fully custom digital-to-analogue converter designed entirely by LUMIN's engineers from individually selected components, purpose-built for the X2's streaming engine.

That distinction matters more than it might initially appear. When a manufacturer designs their own DAC, every aspect of the conversion process is under their control — circuit topology, component selection, power delivery, clocking architecture, and signal routing. The result is a cohesive, optimised system rather than a general-purpose solution adapted for audio. It is, as High Fidelity's Wojciech Pacuła described after his full review, certainly the best LUMIN has ever produced. Audiophile Style's Chris Connaker went further: the X1 — itself one of the most celebrated streaming players in the world — has been surpassed in every way.

We've been fans of LUMIN for years. The X2 is the one they've been working toward.

The Discrete DAC — What It Means and Why It Matters

The LUMIN Discrete DAC sits at the heart of a redesigned system. Two channels, dual mono, controlled by dual ultra-high-speed FPGAs, operating at full 32-bit precision with support for DSD512 and PCM at up to 768 kHz.

Controlled signal path. Each stage of the DAC has been designed from the ground up, with careful attention to component placement and signal routing to minimize interference and preserve channel separation. The layout decisions that a chip-based design accepts as given are here made deliberately, in service of the specific performance targets of the X2.

Low-noise operation. Custom circuitry and refined power management keep the DAC operating within a highly controlled electrical environment, reducing the noise floor that limits resolution in less rigorously engineered designs.

Reduced timing errors. The discrete architecture allows LUMIN to implement clocking and conversion stages directly, without the intermediate frequency dividers that chip-based designs require. The result is a more precise timing environment throughout the signal path — directly audible as better imaging stability, tighter transient definition, and a more coherent and natural presentation.

Femto Clock System. Dual femto crystal oscillators, with an FPGA managing precision clock distribution throughout the DAC architecture. The clocking algorithm is specifically tailored to match the X2's discrete DAC, a level of integration that's only possible when both the DAC and the clock system are designed together.

The Complete Architecture

The discrete DAC is the centerpiece, but the X2 is a complete reference-level engineering effort throughout.

External dual-toroidal linear power supply. Housed in a matching solid billet CNC chassis, the external PSU separates digital and analogue circuitry, uses low-noise linear regulation, and employs the same thick-walled aluminium construction as the main chassis for maximum shielding. The 9-pin output connector maintains the quality of the power delivery path between PSU and player.

Dual mono, dual-stage linear regulator. The analogue conversion circuitry is powered by a dual-stage low-noise regulator in a dual mono configuration — maximum channel separation from power supply to output.

Dual Lundahl output transformers. LUMIN has used Lundahl transformers since the original A1, and the X2 continues this tradition. The LL7401 output transformers deliver the analogue warmth and musical naturalness that distinguish LUMIN's house sound, coupled with the new all-output buffer module that improves clarity, detail, poise, and warmth.

Fully balanced output. XLR balanced outputs at 6 Vrms, pin 2 hot, alongside RCA unbalanced at 3 Vrms. For balanced systems, the X2's fully balanced analogue output module takes full advantage of the differential topology.

Built-in optical network. The SFP socket provides complete galvanic isolation from the rest of the network — the same industry-first feature that made the X1 remarkable, now refined and extended. Dual network ports allow simultaneous connection of router and NAS. The optical connection eliminates the electrical noise that conventional Ethernet carries into the player, with audible benefits in the noise floor and background clarity.

Latest processing architecture. The X2 features LUMIN's fastest processor, first introduced in 2022 and now deployed in the flagship. Greater processing power and storage capacity provide resampling flexibility up to DSD256, audio processing headroom, and a foundation for future firmware updates.

The LUMIN Ecosystem

The X2 connects to everything that matters in a modern streaming system — and LUMIN's commitment to continuous development means it keeps getting better.

Supported streaming services and protocols include TIDAL, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, Audirvāna, JPLAY, KKBox, QQMusic, Plex, MQA, AirPlay, and TuneIn Radio. The LUMIN app provides full control from iOS and Android with native high-resolution artwork, playlist management, multiple tag handling, and seamless switching between sources.

Leedh Processing — LUMIN's proprietary lossless volume control algorithm — is included at no additional cost, eliminating the rounding errors that degrade conventional digital volume adjustment. For systems where the X2 is used as a preamplifier, Leedh Processing means volume control without the loss that would normally accompany it.

The programme of continuous development means new features arrive via firmware update without charge. Recent updates have brought Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Max high-res FLAC, improved Spotify Connect sound quality, and more — to all connected LUMIN players.
