Playing sound is easy. Playing music — the full essence of the recording, with every timing cue and harmonic detail intact — requires the digital signal to arrive at your DAC as clean and precisely timed as possible. Feed a DAC with a noisy or poorly timed signal and that noise gets amplified through everything that follows. The ZEN Next-Gen exists to solve that problem at its source.
It is a ground-up design built on Innuos's Next-Gen architecture: Gallium Nitride power regulation, a custom server-grade mainboard, Sense 3 with real-time kernel, and a modular chassis that adapts to how you want to use it today and where you want to take it tomorrow. Connect it to your DAC and the difference is audible from the first track.
NGaN RECAP2 power supply
The power supply is where digital components either earn their place or compromise everything downstream. The ZEN Next-Gen uses Innuos's new RECAP2 NGaN regulated supply — Gallium Nitride regulation driving linear power modules at a tuned switching frequency that delivers much lower power supply impedance than conventional designs. Lower impedance means the supply responds instantly to the demands of the digital circuitry rather than introducing ripple and noise at the moments the processor needs clean current most. The result is a more transparent signal with better instrument separation — qualities that trace directly back to what happens inside the power supply before any music plays.
PreciseAudio mainboard
A standard server mainboard carries components and generates interference patterns designed for general computing, where audio quality is irrelevant. The PreciseAudio mainboard is an Innuos custom design, built specifically for low processor latency, low power noise, and minimal EMI emissions. Enhanced power regulators and solid capacitors across the board reduce the electrical environment the audio circuitry operates in. The platform the music runs on matters — this is built for that purpose alone.
Processing and AudioCore
An Intel Core i3 provides four physical cores plus four virtual cores — enough processing headroom for responsive operation without the heat dissipation that higher-power processors generate. Innuos AudioCore dedicates specific physical cores entirely to audio processes, keeping them isolated from background system tasks. The remaining cores handle everything else. This separation means the audio pathway has guaranteed, uncontested access to processing resources. 16GB of industrial-grade low-noise DDR4 RAM provides enough headroom to cache databases and files efficiently, keeping response times fast during playback and library management.
Sense 3 and the real-time kernel
Sense 3 is Innuos's music platform and the real-time kernel is what makes it operate at the level it does. A real-time kernel prioritises audio processes above all other system tasks, delivering the most deterministic, precisely timed output the hardware can produce. The music data leaves the ZEN Next-Gen as cleanly as the server can send it — reduced latency at the operating system level, feeding directly into AudioCore's dedicated processing allocation.
Sense 3 handles the full listening experience: CD ripping with drive-head alignment for accurate rips, streaming via Qobuz, TIDAL (including Connect and MAX resolution), Deezer, HighResAudio, and IDAGIO, a unified library combining local and NAS content with streaming catalogues, internet radio with Radio Paradise in CD-quality FLAC, Smart Mixes, collaborative playlists, and multiroom grouping. Everything controlled from the Innuos Sense app on iOS or Android.
Modular storage — up to 16TB
The ZEN Next-Gen's XSM Expandable Storage Management system supports up to 16TB of seamless internal storage through two drive slots: an internal NVMe PCIe drive up to 8TB and an externally accessible M.2 NVMe slot for a second drive up to 8TB. Sense manages the combined pool as a single library, with intelligent data protection built in. The dedicated OS SSD is a separate industrial-grade 3D TLC drive with power-loss protection — the operating system runs on its own clean, isolated storage that never shares bandwidth with your music library.
The ZEN Next-Gen is equally at home configured as a pure streamer with no internal storage, a music server with a full library, or a Roon Core managing endpoints throughout a home. The modular chassis makes all configurations available and switchable.
Optional output modules
The ZEN Next-Gen's digital audio output slot accepts three optional boards, each addressing a specific connection priority:
- PhoenixUSB Board — regenerates and reclocks the USB signal before it reaches the DAC. A 3ppb 24MHz OCXO clock improves timing and signal integrity. Ultra-low noise LT3045 linear regulators power each independent voltage. A clean 5V line feeds the USB connection on the DAC side. The result is a USB output that performs at a level standard USB cannot reach.
- PhoenixI2S Board — bypasses conversion stages entirely with a direct I2S connection to compatible DAC chips via HDMI connector. A 3ppb 24MHz main clock plus two premium femtoclocks. Eight pin configurations for broad DAC compatibility. Supports audio resolution up to DSD1024.
- SPDIF Board — coaxial, optical, and AES outputs for DACs that prefer traditional S/PDIF. PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz. Optimised power supply for ultra-low noise. Gold-plated connectors throughout.
The base USB output is available without any additional module. The output module slot allows the connection to be optimised for the specific DAC in the system, now or in the future.
The chassis
10mm CNC-machined aluminium, bead-blasted and anodised. The transformer platform is vibration-dampened within the chassis. A Chassis Ground port connection is included. The enclosure is built to the standard of a serious audio component, because the mechanical environment the electronics operate in affects what they produce.
Upgradeable to ZENith Next-Gen
The modular construction of the ZEN Next-Gen chassis and components means the unit can be upgraded to a ZENith Next-Gen at any time. The investment in the ZEN Next-Gen is protected — when the system grows and the ZENith's additional refinements become the priority, the path is open.
Where it fits
The ZEN Next-Gen is the right server for a listener who wants a dedicated digital source built on serious architecture, with the flexibility to configure it for their specific system and the ability to extend it as priorities develop. It pairs with the Next-Gen NET switch upstream for a complete Innuos network solution, and with the Next-Gen FLOW reclocker downstream for further refinement of the output before the DAC.
Hi-Fi+ reviewer Alan Sircom put the competitive position clearly: "where does the ZEN Next-Gen sit outside Innuos-world? This is an easy question to answer because it stands very tall indeed. Like the STATEMENT Next-Gen, it stands above its rivals at its price and continues to do so until you get into the super-high end of music servers. Innuos has hit it out of the park again!"
Press recognition
- Hi-Fi+ — Reviewer Alan Sircom described the ZEN Next-Gen as standing above its rivals at its price point, continuing to do so until the super-high end of music servers, and called it an unqualified success for Innuos.
Additional press coverage is developing as the ZEN Next-Gen reaches reviewers internationally. We will update this page as further reviews are published.
