The Technology

The Magik Box uses transformers made from exotic metals for signal amplification. No tubes. No solid state devices. No AC power, no batteries. Nothing to degrade or add noise to the signal in the ways those technologies do. The gain — 6dB — comes purely from transformer action.

By converting capacitor coupling to transformer coupling at the input stage, the Magik Box significantly reduces bass distortion. This is a well-understood phenomenon: transformer coupling handles the low frequencies with a directness that capacitors cannot match. The result is bass that's more natural and more extended, and a midrange that feels more cohesive with it.

Our Experience

We've used the Magik Box in our own system. The improvement in micro-dynamics is the first thing you notice — the smallest dynamic gradations in a performance become more audible. The second thing is what it does to digital playback specifically: the brick-wall harshness that digital can have gets smoothed in a way that doesn't soften the sound so much as make it more analog in character. Worth noting that it's not a warmth addition — it's a distortion reduction.
