Unison Research Simply Italy Black Edition

Ten watts of pure Class A tube power, with three digital inputs built in. The Simply Italy Black Edition uses a new approach to get the most from the KT77 output tube, and it brings the Black Edition series' standard USB, S/PDIF, and Toslink inputs to a compact, handcrafted integrated amplifier.

The Design

Unison Research describes a new solution for the KT77. Electronic biasing keeps the power tube's operating point stable and does away with autobias, so the tube's full power is available. The output transformer was redesigned as a refined five-section unit for maximum quality. The signal paths and power management were revised, and the input selection network uses the same technology as Unison Research's most prized products. The company paid extreme attention to the ground paths and to channel separation using micro relays, to minimize noise.

The output stage uses two KT77 Gold Lion tubes, biased electronically in pure Class A, in the ultralinear region at 43%, ahead of two ECC82 Gold Lion signal tubes. Output power is 10 W, and bandwidth is 15 Hz to 30 kHz (-1 dB). Feedback is selectable between 3 dB and 4 dB.

Inputs and Connections

There are three RCA line inputs and three digital inputs, USB, S/PDIF, and Toslink, which every Black Edition amplifier includes as standard. A stereo RCA subwoofer output completes the connections.
