The LUMIN U2 brings the T3X design philosophy to a dedicated streaming transport — internal toroidal linear power supply, optical fibre network isolation, CNC chassis construction, four low-phase-noise crystal clocks, a dedicated USB audio output, and DSD512/PCM768 digital output suite. No DAC, no analogue stage: pure transport excellence for your external DAC. 6moons: "the sweet spot amongst streamers that are able to simply disappear." Roon Ready. Black or silver.

LUMIN U2 Network Music Transport

The Sweet Spot — Transport Philosophy at the Heart of the Range

The LUMIN U2 was built on a straightforward premise: take the design philosophy that made the T3 the benchmark streamer-DAC in its class — internal toroidal linear power supply, optical fibre networking, CNC chassis construction — and apply it to a transport for the first time.

The result is a dedicated streaming transport positioned precisely between the U2 Mini's compact simplicity and the U2X's flagship engineering, offering the key features that define high-performance transport design without the flagship's price tag.

Frederic Beudot at 6moons put the U2's achievement in the clearest possible terms: the feeling of music crossing into plausibility — where one stops hearing recordings and hears live instruments instead — had been reserved for streamers costing over $10,000, sometimes well over. The LUMIN U2 brings that feeling to its price point. It is, he concluded, the sweet spot not just in the LUMIN range but amongst streamers that are able to simply disappear.

Stephen Scharf at Secrets of Home Theater gave it his highest recommendation, calling it one of the best-designed, best-engineered, best-implemented, and best-sounding digital transports he had ever used or heard. Lite Magazin awarded it 99/100 and Referenzklasse status.

What the U2 Brings to the Transport Category

The U2 is a transport-only device — no DAC, no analogue output. Its purpose is to receive music from the network and deliver the cleanest, most precisely clocked digital signal possible to the DAC input. Every design decision serves that goal.

Internal ultra-low-noise toroidal linear power supply. The U2 is the first LUMIN transport to include a built-in linear power supply — borrowed from the P1 and T3 design lineage. The extra-large toroidal transformer, ultra-low-noise rectifier, and linear regulator provide a stable, quiet power foundation that switching supplies cannot match. Quieter power means a quieter signal — and a lower noise floor at the DAC input.

Dedicated "direct-coupled" USB digital audio output. The U2 features three USB ports — one dedicated specifically to digital audio output, leaving two free for music storage and accessories. The dedicated audio output port is optimised for low-noise digital audio transmission, with the direct-coupled design providing the cleanest possible USB signal to the connected DAC.

Optical fibre network isolation. The SFP port provides complete galvanic isolation between the network infrastructure and the transport — the electrical noise from the router, switch, and network cabling cannot travel over a glass fibre connection. The dual network ports allow simultaneous connection of router and NAS, with the built-in network switch eliminating the need for additional switching hardware near the hi-fi.

Four crystal clock oscillators. Four exceptionally low-phase-noise crystal clock oscillators provide the precision timing foundation for the digital output stage. Low phase noise translates directly to lower jitter — and lower jitter at the transport output means more accurate timing recovery at the DAC.

CNC chassis construction. The U2 is the first LUMIN transport to use the CNC-panelled aluminium construction previously reserved for players and flagship transports. Thick CNC-milled panels provide upgraded structural rigidity and electromagnetic shielding compared to the U2 Mini's chassis, housing the transport's electronics in a more controlled environment.

Latest processing platform. Upsampling to DSD256 or PCM 384 kHz for all source files, with downsampling also supported — full flexibility to find the optimal input rate for any DAC.

What It Sounds Like

The U2's character is described consistently across reviewers as natural, relaxed, and coherent — with exceptional resolution and a spatial presentation that draws the listener into the music rather than the mechanics of playback.

6moons' Frederic Beudot found everything in the U2 serves timing integrity and noise suppression: in typical LUMIN fashion, the U2 doesn't process music — it protects it. Secrets' Stephen Scharf described the first impression as tonal accuracy and harmonic richness, outstanding clarity, and a relaxed and musically engaging presentation. High Fidelity's Wojciech Pacuła found the U2 achieved something rare: resolution and richness simultaneously, without choosing between them.

Steve Huff's description is vivid and direct — silky, sweet, smooth, detailed, three-dimensional, emotional, and beautiful. With a quality DAC, he placed the combination among the finest digital sound he had heard, competitive with streamers costing double or more.

Lite Magazin's Philipp Schneckenburger noted the U2's balanced, spatial, and liquid sound character — enjoyable for many hours without fatigue, enhanced further by the upsampling capability that extracts additional performance from lower-resolution recordings.

The LUMIN Streaming Platform

The U2 supports every major streaming service: TIDAL, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, Audirvāna, JPLAY, AirPlay, KKBox, QQMusic, Plex, MQA, and TuneIn Radio. The LUMIN app provides full control from iOS, Android, and Mac, with the intuitive interface that has been described as the most convenient in existence.

Leedh Processing lossless volume control is included — eliminating the rounding errors of conventional digital attenuation for those who want to use the U2 as a volume-controlled digital source. LUMIN's programme of continuous development ensures ongoing firmware updates at no cost.
