The LUMIN U2 Mini is a compact network music transport — no DAC, no analogue output, pure streaming source excellence for your external DAC. Five digital output types including USB to DSD512, PCM to 768 kHz, quad native clock system, upsampling to DSD256 or PCM 384 kHz, and the full LUMIN streaming platform including Roon, TIDAL Connect, and Qobuz. Hi-Fi Choice 5-star Editor's Choice: "a streaming gem — will extract the best from any DAC." Black or silver.

LUMIN U2 Mini Network Music Transport

A Streaming Gem — The Transport Sweet Spot

The U2 Mini occupies a specific and compelling position in the LUMIN transport lineup. Like the U2X above it, it is a transport-only device — no DAC, no analogue output, purely a network streaming source for an external DAC. Unlike the U2X, it does this in a compact all-aluminium chassis without an external power supply, at a price that makes the transport philosophy accessible to a much wider range of systems.

Hi-Fi Choice's David Vivian awarded it five stars and their Editor's Choice, calling it "a streaming gem, simple as that" — a compact transport offering great flexibility and cutting-edge technology that will extract the best from any DAC. What Hi-Fi? gave it five stars. Audiophilia gave it their Star Component award. Hi-Fi Class gave it another Editor's Choice. Twittering Machines' Michael Lavorgna called it "damn near transparent."

The consensus across eight publications is consistent: the U2 Mini competes well above its price class in the quality of digital signal it delivers to whatever DAC it feeds.

Transport-Only — Why It Matters at This Price

The argument for a dedicated streaming transport applies here exactly as it does for the U2X: by separating the streaming function from the DAC and analogue conversion, each can be optimised without compromise from the other. Digital noise from processing circuitry doesn't contaminate an analogue stage that doesn't exist. The U2 Mini's engineering is focused entirely on one task — delivering a clean, precisely clocked, low-jitter digital signal to the DAC input.

What changes relative to the U2X is scale and specification, not philosophy. The U2 Mini uses a compact chassis rather than a solid billet CNC design, an internal shielded power supply rather than an external dual-toroidal unit, a quad native clock system rather than a femto clock system, and standard copper Ethernet rather than the SFP optical port. No 10M clock I/O. These are real differences — the U2X is a more ambitious engineering effort — but the U2 Mini retains the LUMIN processing platform, the full five-output digital stage, USB to DSD512, and the full LUMIN streaming software ecosystem.

For listeners who want the transport philosophy without the U2X's level of investment, the U2 Mini is where LUMIN's thinking about transport design becomes accessible.

Five Digital Outputs — Every DAC Connection Covered

USB — Native DSD512, PCM up to 768 kHz/32-bit. The primary high-resolution connection for modern DACs.

AES/EBU — PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit, DSD64 DoP. For DACs with professional balanced digital inputs.

BNC coaxial — PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit, DSD64 DoP. The preferred S/PDIF connector for impedance-matched digital connections.

RCA coaxial — PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit, DSD64 DoP. Standard S/PDIF for DACs without BNC.

Optical (TOSLINK) — PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit, DSD64 DoP. For DACs with optical inputs, with inherent galvanic isolation.

Whatever digital input your DAC provides, the U2 Mini has a matching output — including the USB connection that most modern high-performance DACs prioritize for its high-resolution DSD and PCM capabilities.

Upsampling Flexibility

The U2 Mini's processing platform provides upsampling to DSD256 or PCM 384 kHz for all source files. This allows listeners to find their DAC's optimal input rate — some DACs sound their best at a specific format, and the U2 Mini's flexible upsampling makes it straightforward to experiment and find the configuration that works best in a specific system.

Downsampling is also supported, allowing files of any format to be converted to any lower rate. Combined with the five output types, the U2 Mini adapts to virtually any DAC's capabilities and preferred input.

The LUMIN Software Platform

The U2 Mini runs LUMIN's full streaming platform: Roon Ready, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Audirvāna, JPLAY, AirPlay, Amazon Music Unlimited, KKBox, QQMusic, Plex, MQA, and TuneIn Radio. The LUMIN app manages all sources from iOS, Android, or Mac, with high-resolution artwork, playlist management, and the same intuitive interface found across the entire LUMIN range.

Leedh Processing lossless volume control is included — useful for those who want to route the U2 Mini's digital output through the DAC and control volume via Leedh rather than introducing a preamplifier into the chain.

LUMIN's programme of continuous development means firmware updates continue to add features — the U2 Mini benefits from the same engineering attention as every other current LUMIN product.
