QSA Color Levels Explained: What You Hear From Yellow to Gold

I'm often asked about the differences between the levels of QSA treatment. Up to now, my answer has been "with each level up, you get more: more dimensionality, more detail, and more naturalness in the music." After living with QSA products for a while, though, I'm hearing more specific differences, and the progression isn't always linear.

My goal with this post is to lay out the differences between the color levels of the original (OG) series, the core ladder you'll see on QSA fuses, AC receptacles, the circuit breaker, and QSA AC and analog adapters. I'll follow up with the Crystal and Horn series in a later post. And yes, there are more variations within each level than I cover here, but this will give you the lay of the land.

Here we go.

Yellow

The entry level. Yellow gives you a taste of the upper QSA levels. For those who are familiar, it's similar in sound to the Bybee AC Purifiers of old, though not quite as powerful. Glare and harshness drop away, and the soundstage expands in every direction. It's great for entry-level systems or peripheral gear like networking equipment.

Violet

Violet hits a little differently. It presents the midrange and highs as more relaxed than Yellow, or Red for that matter. The soundstage expands and is more obviously dimensional than with Yellow. If your system is already warm, or a bit shy in the high frequencies, you'll likely be better served going to Red.

Orange

You'll find Orange on QSA AC adapters and analog adapters, sitting between Violet and Red. Orange opens things up more than Violet does. The leap in naturalness and low-level resolution comes at the next step, with Red.

Red

Here's where things start getting interesting. The mids and highs come fully forward, and there's a whole lot more going on in the soundstage. Detail retrieval scales up, and naturalness, cohesiveness, and musical flow really come into play. In any system, Red delivers refinement, openness, holography, and flow. Many customers stop here.

Black/Red

A real leap happens here. Just when you think your system can't get any better than it does with Red, Black/Red says, "Hold my beer." I'd bet you've never truly heard your components until you hear them with Black/Red fuses or a Black/Red AC receptacle at the wall.

Don't think for a second that Red is a compromise. There's simply more to discover in the music, and Black/Red reveals it very obviously. Had I never heard Black/Red, I would have been happy to stop at Red. This is truly a case of the next level delivering more of everything the previous level delivers. Twice as much, as the price indicates? Absolutely.

Silver

The leap from Black/Red to Silver is smaller than the leap from Red to Black/Red. Some customers report slightly more high-frequency detail, though I didn't experience that myself. You do go deeper, wider, and higher than with Black/Red. This one is for those on a mission to see how far QSA can take them, regardless of price.

Gold

From here forward, the leaps in performance are large, and so are the price differences. Your system seems to disappear even more and becomes more resolving, holographic, and natural. Again, it leaves you asking "how?" But once you hear it, you understand. Gold is where I've settled. Gold fuses, a Gold circuit breaker, and a Gold AC receptacle make up what I call the QSA "Trifecta."

A Peek Above Gold: Crystal Gold/Red

Crystal Gold/Red (CGR) gets into stratospheric pricing, so a thoughtful implementation pays off across the whole system. Everything opens up at this level. Low-level detail retrieval is insane, and so are the soundstage, dynamics, effortlessness, flow, and naturalness. Where it works best: a CGR circuit breaker is the way to go. If you can swing one more CGR item, make it the wall receptacle feeding your system.

Where to Start

  • Network gear or an entry-level system: Yellow
  • A step past Violet on adapters: Orange
  • A system that's already warm or soft on top: skip ahead to Red
  • Refinement, openness, and flow in any system: Red, where many customers happily stop
  • The biggest single leap on the ladder: Black/Red
  • My own endgame: the Gold Trifecta of fuses, breaker, and receptacle

Not sure where to start? Our QSA Trade-Up Program gives you full credit toward the next level on QSA AC receptacles, AC adapters, analog adapters, and networking products, so you can start where you're comfortable and move up when you're ready.
