Most audiophiles spend considerable time and money optimizing the analog side of their system — interconnects, speaker cables, power cords — and then connect their transport to their DAC with whatever digital cable came to hand. It's an easy oversight to make. After all, S/PDIF is a digital signal. Either the bits arrive or they don't, right?

Not quite. The S/PDIF interface carries not just data but a self-clocked signal where timing is embedded in the waveform itself. Cable impedance matching, reflections, and noise all affect the integrity of that timing — and timing errors in the digital domain translate directly into jitter at the DAC input, which manifests as a subtle but persistent blurring of imaging, a slight hardening of transients, and a loss of the easy, natural flow that well-mastered digital recordings are capable of delivering.

Built for the Job

S/PDIF over BNC is widely regarded as the highest-quality implementation of the S/PDIF interface — the BNC connector's secure bayonet lock and consistent 75-ohm impedance make it more reliable and lower in reflections than the RCA alternative. The frontRow BNC is engineered to take full advantage of this, with a true 75-ohm design throughout.

The conductor is 99.9999% pure OCC copper in Audience's frontRow twinaxial geometry — a twin-axial ribbon lay specifically optimized for digital signal transmission. An OFC copper braid shield wraps the assembly, providing effective protection against RF and electromagnetic interference that would otherwise contribute to jitter and noise at the DAC.

The dielectric combines virgin cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) on signal conductors and PTFE Teflon where its superior dielectric properties are most beneficial — a pairing that keeps the signal fast, clean, and accurately timed from transport to DAC.

Each cable is assessed for signal directionality before build. MORRE Deep Cryo II and EHVP post-production are applied after final assembly, and the finished cable is burned in for three to four days before shipping.
