ModWright didn't design the LS 99 by working up from a budget. They designed it by working down from the top — taking the topology, the transformer architecture, and the core circuit philosophy of the LS 300 Reference flagship and asking what could be simplified without surrendering what matters.

Dan Wright's own assessment: 95% of the sonics at nearly $5,000 less. That's not marketing language. It's a candid acknowledgment from the designer that the LS 99 competes in the same conversation as the flagship — and that for most listeners in most systems, the remaining 5% is not the conversation they need to be having.

The Architecture

Fully balanced topology throughout. Transformer-coupled output stage — the approach that defines ModWright's preamp philosophy and produces the combination of warmth, dimensionality, and spatial precision that their designs are known for. Zero global negative feedback tube circuit. The same fundamental engineering choices as the LS 300, implemented in a chassis that costs less to produce.

Our Experience

We've had the LS 99 in our reference system against the Unico Nuovo. The ModWright is more analytical — more information retrieval, more surgical precision. For systems that benefit from that character, or for listeners who want to hear every detail the recording contains, the LS 99 is exceptional. For listeners who prioritize musical engagement over analytical completeness, that conversation depends on the rest of the system.
