LUMIN U2X Network Streaming Transport
LUMIN U2X Network Streaming Transport
You already own a DAC you love. What it needs is the best possible digital signal. The U2X is LUMIN's flagship transport, built for exactly that job: everything in the box is dedicated to delivering clean, precisely timed digital audio to your DAC, with the same billet construction and external power supply as LUMIN's X-Series flagships.
The best thing you can do for a great DAC is feed it from a U2X.
The Design
The U2X and its separate power supply are each milled from a solid block of aluminium, giving thick, uninterrupted walls for maximum stiffness and shielding. The power supply uses dual toroidal transformers, separate digital and analog circuits, and low-noise linear regulation.
Its centerpiece is a new isolated USB output on its own dedicated port, designed to keep noise from the transport away from your DAC. The U2X also offers AES/EBU, coaxial RCA and BNC, and optical outputs, so it connects to virtually any DAC. It plays native DSD512 and PCM 768kHz over USB, and LUMIN's fastest processor provides upsampling up to DSD256.
The U2X is the first LUMIN with 10MHz clock connections: one input and two outputs. Connect a master clock to the input, or use the U2X's outputs to synchronise other digital components to a single, stable timing reference. Optical fibre networking isolates the U2X completely from network noise, and the second network port doubles as a built-in switch.
How It Sounds
Reviewers describe a transport that makes the DAC after it sound like a better DAC. StereoNET's Eric Teh heard a strikingly realistic, holographic portrayal of instruments and voices, fluid and non-fatiguing yet highly resolving. 6moons' Frederic Beudot found it more real and tactile than any other streamer he'd heard for microdynamics and inner detail. Hi-Fi News heard music become more clear-cut, with more substance, definition, and rightness, even through simpler DACs.
Where It Fits
The U2X is for listeners who have invested in an excellent DAC and want a transport worthy of it. With a 10MHz master clock such as the Matrix Audio SC-1, the U2X joins a fully clocked digital system. For a transport at a lower price, the U2 and U2 Mini follow the same transport-only approach. If you'd rather have LUMIN's own conversion, the X2 shares the U2X's chassis construction and power supply with LUMIN's discrete DAC inside.
