ModWright KWA 300 Reference Stereo Power Amplifier
ModWright has been building solid-state amplifiers since the KWA 150, and that amplifier set a specific expectation — that a well-designed solid-state amp could carry some of what makes tubes worth listening to without giving up control, resolution, or the ability to drive difficult speakers. The KWA 150 earned worldwide recognition for that combination. Every ModWright solid-state amplifier since has been built on the same foundation: the Solid State Music Stage, originally developed by Alan Kimmel, refined continuously over more than twenty years.
The KWA 300 is where that refinement currently stands. More power, lower noise, greater precision, and a more sophisticated overall execution. It is not a departure from what ModWright has always done. It is the fullest expression of it.
The circuit
The KWA 300 uses a single gain stage topology with zero global feedback. These two decisions are related and both are deliberate. A single gain stage keeps the signal path short and the phase relationships intact — fewer stages means fewer opportunities to introduce timing errors that manifest as a slightly blurred or mechanical quality in the sound. Zero global feedback means the amplifier is not correcting its own output by comparing it to the input and applying a correction signal. Global feedback lowers measured distortion numbers, but it also introduces phase shift and a kind of mechanical character that some listeners find audible even when the measurements look clean. ModWright has chosen to live with whatever the circuit produces naturally rather than mask it with correction.
The input stage is a discrete differential design. Both RCA and XLR inputs are transformer-coupled to the SSMS input stage with a floated ground — the transformer coupling provides a degree of isolation between the source component and the amplifier's input stage, blocking common-mode noise and ground-borne interference before it reaches the gain circuit. Input impedance is 47kΩ on both inputs, compatible with virtually any preamplifier.
Power supply
A 2KVA toroidal transformer anchors the power supply. That is a substantial transformer for a stereo amplifier — the kind of reserve that determines how the amplifier behaves on transients, when the music demands a sudden large current delivery that the output stage has to meet without compression or hardening. The power rating reflects what that supply can sustain: 300 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 550 watts into 4 ohms. That near-doubling of output power as the impedance halves indicates a supply with genuine current capacity rather than one that clips early under load.
Operation is Class A/B with a high Class A bias point. The amplifier runs in pure Class A up to a meaningful output level before transitioning — the intention is to keep the most audible part of the dynamic range within the Class A region while avoiding the thermal, efficiency, and cost penalties of full Class A operation at this power level.
Build quality
The KWA 300 is designed and hand-assembled in Amboy, Washington. ModWright is a small operation and Dan Wright's direct involvement in every product shows in how these amplifiers are built. Binding posts are WBT — positive in red, negative in white, not bridged. An internal LED on/off switch allows the front panel illumination to be disabled for listening sessions where light is a distraction. Two 12V trigger connections handle power sequencing with a preamplifier or processor. At 95 pounds the KWA 300 is a serious physical presence — plan accordingly for placement and any rack work.
What it sounds like
We carry ModWright because Dan Wright builds amplifiers that sound like music rather than amplifiers that sound impressive. The KWA series has always had an organic quality — a natural flow and dimensionality that is more associated with good tube amplification than with solid-state design. The KWA 300 carries that character with more authority than its predecessors. There is more headroom, more dynamic ease, and a lower noise floor, and the result is a presentation that handles both the quietest passages and the loudest transients without changing character at either extreme.
If you have been drawn to tubes for their tonal realism and dimensionality but have struggled with their limitations in terms of power, control, or load compatibility, the KWA 300 is a serious conversation to have.
