A well-treated room needs two things: absorption to clear up harsh reflections, and diffusion to keep the room sounding open and alive. Most diffusers look like lab equipment. The Wavewood Diffuser Ultra MKII looks like a piece of fine woodwork, and it brings the ambience back to a room that absorption alone can leave flat.

Design

The face is a sequence of slats at carefully varied depths, modeled on a QRD (quadratic residue diffuser), the mathematical pattern acousticians use to scatter sound evenly. Each slat is MDF wrapped in high-pressure laminate with a realistic wood or matte finish, mounted on a lightweight grey EPS base. The result is a diffuser that performs like a studio design at a fraction of the weight, so it installs easily on walls or ceilings.

The MKII adds built-in holder ribs for Vicoustic's VicFix mounting system, with VicFix Mini wall mounts included.

Finishes are shared with Vicoustic's matching absorbers, the VicPattern Ultra Wavewood MKII and Wavewood Ultra Lite, so you can mix diffusion and absorption across a wall with a single, seamless look. Black Matte, White Matte, and Natural Oak ship quickly; Brown Oak, Dark Walnut, Natural Walnut, and Locarno Cherry are made to order in about 12 weeks.

What You'll Hear

The Wavewood breaks up flutter echo and excess energy in the mid and high frequencies while keeping that energy in the room as gentle, spread-out ambience. The room stays bright and lively, the soundstage gains depth, and music keeps its natural sense of space. With a light NRC of 0.3, it also takes a little edge off the reflections it scatters.

Installation

On walls, use the included VicFix Mini or the VicFix J Profile 2m rail (sold separately). Ceiling installation uses Flexi Glue Ultra (sold separately).
